Searching for Life As We Don't Know It: “It is time to make a radical change in our present geocentric mindset for life as we know it on Earth,” said Dr. Johannes Leitner, from the research group. “Even though this is the only kind of life we know, it cannot be ruled out that life forms have evolved somewhere that neither rely on water nor on a carbon and oxygen based metabolism.”'

Always nice to see someone talking about life as we don't know it.

Gave the Mustang's page a significant cleanup so that it reflects the current state of the car.

Picture this: I was at the counter of Nona's Kitchen in Pacifica, minding my own business and reading a book. As I was paying my bill, the bearded little old man who'd been sitting next to me the whole time spoke up out of the blue and asked if I'd ever read any Bukowski. I allowed as to how I had, he showed me the poem he'd been reading and we wound up talking Bukowski for about five minutes.

Later that day, I was putting some new books into my bookshelves which at one point necessitated removing the end book from one shelf to make room for one of the additions. The choice was either split the HST collection onto two shelves or to pick the singleton book from the other end. I made the obvious choice and pulled down the singleton, which happened to be the only Bukowski book I own.

When I opened it, I found two thousand dollars. You can imagine my surprise.

I bought the book while traveling some years ago so I must have stashed the cash in it so it wasn't all on me...I just wish I could remember which trip....I then I FORGOT about it.

So yeah, put THAT into your synchronicity pipe and smoke it.

Wow.

Kinda paging through the Atom feed for this blog and, well, I've read at least four posts in the last year stating that the Mustang is "fixed". At least. I've literally lost count.

Is it wishful thinking to believe it now? Yeah, it would be, if I did believe it. Too bad I slept through that last autocross and wasn't able to shake it down any. Sigh. Boy it sure drives nice on the street though.

Interesting blog post putting forth the theory that Dune has ruined science fiction novels by being too long:

  1. "Gone are the days of the 200 page book, which could be devoured in a couple of days. Instead, he says science fiction novels are less interested in telling interesting stories with novel ideas than in cramming in every detail until the book is better as a doorstop than a form of entertainment."

Really? THAT is the argument that Dune wrecked SciFi? I hate to say it but, under correct conditions, I can go through five, six, maybe eight hundred pages of SciFi in "a couple of days". When I read these little two hundred page books, they end almost before they begin. I'm consistently not reading the classics (such as Ender's Game mentioned in the post) because I can't stand making the emotional commitment to an engaging story and then having it end after a couple of hours. I want to be transported to an alternate reality and then KEPT THERE. That's what ESCAPE is and I hate moving to new universes every couple of hours.

Get an attention span.

Got the Lotus back today with a new set of (used) rotors and some new Hawk Blue pads. Rob also removed the rearview mirror and the sun visors to improve my current camera angle.

Doesn't matter. I'm not running tomorrow. Sigh. A three week old shoulder injury (lifting my 100lb floor jack out of the Mustang's trunk) is getting WORSE to the point that a coworker commented on how I hurt myself today at lunch picking up a fork. Feels rotator cuff-ish. Joy. So, I've pretty much called physical activity for the moment, including driving, although I am going to try some cardio tomorrow and Friday.

I have a doctor appointment on Friday. Yes, there's a reason I waited so long to get it checked out. In a word: red tape. More later.
