I want my six hours back...

Got the fileserver working again, but I wound up reinstalling it. I'm actually glad that it happened, since I learned a lot about recovering an encrypted LVM filesystem and grub2.

2010-04-10 GGLC Autocross

Video from the Golden Gate Lotus Club autocross last weekend at Great America:

I don't compete for points but my best time of 49.210 was good for 19th out of 68 timed drivers. Considering that I had not autocrossed since 2008, I'm pretty happy with my ranking for the day.

The course was....Interesting. There was a lot of gravel in the lot and the lot itself was nowhere near level. After my first run, which included my first controlled four wheel drift in the Lotus, I commented to the timer that I should have brought a rally car. I was seriously considering trying to pull a handbrake turn in the hairpin right-hander about halfway through the course. Not that I know how to pull a handbrake turn....

unshift

Apparently, holding down shift is supposed to make grub2 display the hidden menu. Doesn't work, of course, but that might be because the only USB keyboard I have in the house is a Mac keyboard.

Ubuntu can lick me

"According to an email that was sent out today Monday, August 10, 2009 with the newest Grub2 update, the boot menu is hidden by default now. It's easy to get it back, just edit /etc/default/grub and comment out GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT"

That's fucking BRILLIANT guys, especially when combined with bug 450620.

I'm so fucking HAPPY that y'all shaved 2s off of the boot time of my server by hiding the GRUB menu, especially now that I'm wasting over an hour downloading a livecd so I can decrypt my disk so I can turn the goddamn boot menu back on so I can boot the working kernel that is already installed. Just brilliant.
